Nancy Jane Ricker was born in North Lebanon, York County, Maine on 30 June 1823, daughter of Ezekiel Jr. and Nancy Hurd (Coffin) Ricker. She married (1) Nathaniel Caverly, son of Nicholas and Betsey (Stickney) Caverly, on 20 October 1844 in Barrington, Strafford County, N.H. After Nathaniel's death on 26 August 1845 she married (2) John Stickney Caverly, son of Nicholas and Betsey (Stickney) Caverly, and brother of her late husband Nathaniel. Nancy and John married on 25 May 1847 in Barrington. Nancy died in Lebanon, York County, Maine on 6 May 1873 and was buried in the Nathaniel Caverly Family Cemetery in Barrington.1
Nancy and Nathaniel Caverly had one son, Nathaniel Jr. Nancy and John Stickney Caverly had eight children: Catherine Buzzell, Joseph Lewis, John Colby, Francis Ezekiel, Edith Woodbury, Charles Martin, Mary Jane, and Flora Ricker.2
The Journal of Reverend Enoch Hayes Place, a Free-Will Baptist minister and spiritual advisor to the Caverly family, lends insight into the religious life of the Caverly Family. Below are excerpts from the Journal of Reverend Place, referring to visits he made to the home of John and Nancy and their family.
Saturday, March 8, 1862: We visited and prayed at Brother Timothy Drew’s and Brother Nicholas Caverly’s in Barrington. Sold one history, and received one dollar as a present from Mrs. John S. Caverly.3
Below is Nancy's death notice as it appeared in The New Hampshire Patriot:4
Mrs. John S. Caverly, of Barrington, Mass., died very suddenly on Tuesday morning. She retired apparently as well as usual on Monday night, and at about two o’clock in the morning complained of feeling unwell and almost instantly expired. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause.
